J. Peters is not only a good friend but also an excellent published writer. His books are such an incredible inspiration to me and have given me so much hope in my journey with Bipolar 1 disease. We have so much in common when it comes to our mental illnesses. In the pages of his books are stories which are very similar to my walk through darkness and manias. It is so refreshing to be able to relate to someone so vividly! I am so happy that he and I met and are able to share similar experiences with mental illness.
This book is very nuanced and was written with the reader in mind. It gives a first-hand account of living with a mental health issue, and how you can – with support from family and friends – can surmount this challenge.
For many of us, our first love was one of the strongest and most exciting experiences, as well as most painful. In “Small Fingernails,” protagonist Jacques not only has to struggle with feelings of love for someone who chose not to return those feelings, but he has to struggle with acute mental health challenges as well. His journey is not easy to read as his blind desperation exacerbated by his mental health can feel very unpleasant to the reader, but J Peters writes with enough energy to carry you to its conclusion quickly. “University on Watch” is similarly fast-paced and energetic, but this time Jacques’ attention is focused on an unwinnable battle to get readmitted to his college’s English degree program, which he allienated by pushing them too hard and making threats, again under the influence of acute mental health difficulties and street drugs. The nice this about “University…” is that it concludes with Jacques return to a normal, working, independent life with strong support from his family and friends. This can give hope to a lot of people facing similar issues. I look forward to reading “Wales High School” soon.
J Peters sheds an excellent depiction on mental health during one of the most critical development periods of a persons life. His ability to capture the entire though process and emotions of someone struggling with mental illness has helped normalize and debunk the stigma of mental illness in our community. I highly recommend this book for those struggling with their own mental health and for others to better comprehend how mental illness affects so many of us in society. Well done!!

Now, I’m anxiously waiting for Wales high school (first diagnosis). I’m just so curious to know what his journey was during his high school years!
I found this book To be very powerful. The author brilliantly expresses the experience of living with Mental illness so vividly. I cried at times and held my breath at others. The Road traveled and the torment can turn to a beautiful place with love and support of family ind friends. The awareness of the author is profound and sharing this through a great book is amazing. Bravo!!!
A very interesting first hand account of a young man’s struggle with mental illness and the educational system. Highly recommended reading for anyone interested in mental health and it’s relationship with academia.
This is a touching story of what happens when the systems we navigate do not have appropriate measures in place to support students who are struggling with their mental health. The author manages to make his story relatable, informative and hopeful. Great read full of information and resources.
